Advanced research

Aims Research is taken to be a combination of activities pursued by intellectuals and gifted persons who are committed to the pursuit of true knowledge. As an intellectual activity, research is responsible for bringing new knowledge to light, rectifying our mistakes, reshuffling misconceptions and adding knowledge to our existing repository of knowledge. Assuming that PhD students have already acquired sufficient theoretical knowledge of research methods and research approaches and also knowing that research is often complex and multi-faceted, the present course aims to provide more relevant procedural knowledge of how to conduct research. To this aim, every week students are required to choose a research paper that has been published in a scholarly journal and reflect on the paper at two levels: the rhetorical structure of the paper and the methodology adopted for conducting the research. The paper is presented in the classroom in ۱۰ to ۱۵ minutes followed by arguments for or against the analysis. Students are required to submit to their professor their analysis of each paper in the form of a reaction paper (۱۶ reaction papers altogether).
